Belconnen Arts Centre
The Belconnen Arts Centre is a community facility for the production and exhibition of local, interstate and international dance and artistic works. The building is zinc clad, structural steel structure which contains a number of interesting design concepts, from the angle of exterior linings to the curved walls and the unique faceted ceiling to the main foyer which looks out over Lake Ginninderra.
The significant use of zinc linings installed at a 6 degree angle on curved walls over most of the exterior, while relatively simple in its design, is essentially a totally hand applied product of sheets of zinc between 250mm and 650mm wide, with each sheet individually installed and each joint hand folded. The ceiling to the main foyer required significant planning, setting out and meticulous installation, particularly with the plaster works to ensure all of the angles, joints and surfaces aligned symmetrically.
