Hu Guo Bao En Buddhist Temple – Nicholls ACT
Purpose built to accommodate an entire congregation in one place, the Hu Guo Bao En Temple incorporates a prayer hall, pagoda, ceremonial furnace, landscaped gardens and car parking, as well as conference and display rooms, a commercial kitchen and accommodation for the abbot and nuns.
The design incorporates conventional structural elements – such as concrete, steel and timber – while external finishes include various feature masonry and cladding treatments. The roof consists of traditional ornamental features with a copper-coloured terracotta tile.
A central water feature is dominated by a six-metre-high, 18 tonne granite statue that was sculpted in China.
